26:1 ユダの王、ヨシヤの子ヨヤキムの治世の初めに、主からこの言葉がエレミヤに臨んだ。

26:2 「主はこう言われる。主の神殿の庭に立って語れ。ユダの町々から礼拝のために主の神殿に来るすべての者に向かって語るように、わたしが命じるこれらの言葉をすべて語れ。ひと言も減らしてはならない。

26:3 彼らが聞いて、それぞれ悪の道から立ち帰るかもしれない。そうすれば、わたしは彼らの悪のゆえにくだそうと考えている災いを思い直す。

26:4 彼らに向かって言え。主はこう言われる。もし、お前たちがわたしに聞き従わず、わたしが与えた律法に従って歩まず、

26:5 倦むことなく遣わしたわたしの僕である預言者たちの言葉に聞き従わないならば――お前たちは聞き従わなかったが――

26:6 わたしはこの神殿をシロのようにし、この都を地上のすべての国々の呪いの的とする。」

26:7 祭司と預言者たちとすべての民は、エレミヤが主の神殿でこれらの言葉を語るのを聞いた。

26:8 エレミヤが、民のすべての者に語るように主に命じられたことを語り終えると、祭司と預言者たちと民のすべては、彼を捕らえて言った。「あなたは死刑に処せられねばならない。

26:9 なぜ、あなたは主の名によって預言し、『この神殿はシロのようになり、この都は荒れ果てて、住む者もなくなる』と言ったのか」と。すべての民は主の神殿でエレミヤのまわりに集まった。

26:10 ユダの高官たちはこれらの言葉を聞き、王の宮殿から主の神殿に上って来て、主の神殿の新しい門の前で裁きの座に着いた。

26:11 祭司と預言者たちは、高官たちと民のすべての者に向かって言った。「この人の罪は死に当たります。彼は、あなたがた自身が聞かれたように、この都に敵対する預言をしました。」

26:12 エレミヤは高官たちと民のすべての者に向かって言った。「主がわたしを遣わされ、お前たちが聞いたすべての言葉をこの神殿とこの都に対して預言させられたのだ。

26:13 今こそ、お前たちは自分の道と行いを正し、お前たちの神、主の声に聞き従わねばならない。主はこのように告げられた災いを思い直されるかもしれない。

26:14 わたしはお前たちの手中にある。お前たちの目に正しく、善いと思われることをするがよい。

26:15 ただ、よく覚えておくがよい、わたしを殺せば、お前たち自身と、この都とその住民の上に、無実の者の血を流した罪を招くということを。確かに、主がわたしを遣わし、これらのすべての言葉をお前たちの耳に告げさせられたのだから。」

26:16 高官たちと民のすべての者は、祭司と預言者たちに向かって言った。「この人には死に当たる罪はない。彼は我々の神、主の名によって語ったのだ。」

26:17 この地の長老が数人立ち上がり、民の全会衆に向かって言った。

26:18 「モレシェトの人ミカはユダの王ヒゼキヤの時代に、ユダのすべての民に預言して言った。『万軍の主はこう言われる。シオンは耕されて畑となり／エルサレムは石塚に変わり／神殿の山は木の生い茂る丘となる』と。

26:19 ユダの王ヒゼキヤとユダのすべての人々は、彼を殺したであろうか。主を畏れ、その恵みを祈り求めたので、主は彼らに告げた災いを思い直されたではないか。我々は自分の上に大きな災いをもたらそうとしている。」

◆預言者ウリヤの死

26:20 主の名によって預言していた人がもうひとりいた。それは、キルヤト・エアリムの人、シェマヤの子ウリヤである。彼はこの都とこの国に対して、エレミヤの言葉と全く同じような預言をしていた。

26:21 ヨヤキム王は、すべての武将と高官たちと共に彼の言葉を聞き、彼を殺そうとした。ウリヤはこれを聞いて、恐れ、逃れて、エジプトに行った。

26:22 ヨヤキム王はアクボルの子エルナタンを、数人の者と共にエジプトに遣わした。

26:23 ウリヤはエジプトから連れ戻され、ヨヤキム王の前に引き出された。王は彼を剣で撃ち、その死体を共同墓地へ捨てさせた。

26:24 しかし、シャファンの子アヒカムはエレミヤを保護し、民の手に落ちて殺されることのないようにした。

26:1 Soon after Jehoiakim son of Josiah became king of Judah,

26:2 the Lord said to me, "Stand in the court of the Temple and proclaim all I have commanded you to say to the people who come from the towns of Judah to worship there. Do not leave out anything.

26:3 Perhaps the people will listen and give up their evil ways. If they do, then I will change my mind about the destruction I plan to bring on them for all their wicked deeds."

26:4 The Lord told me to say to the people, "I, the Lord, have said that you must obey me by following the teaching that I gave you,

26:5 and by paying attention to the words of my servants, the prophets, whom I have kept on sending to you. You have never obeyed what they said.

26:6 If you continue to disobey, then I will do to this Temple what I did to Shiloh, and all the nations of the world will use the name of this city as a curse."

26:7 The priests, the prophets, and all the people heard me saying these things in the Temple,

26:8 and as soon as I had finished all that the Lord had commanded me to speak, they grabbed me and shouted, "You ought to be killed for this!

26:9 Why have you said in the Lord's name that this Temple will become like Shiloh and that this city will be destroyed and no one will live in it?" Then the people crowded around me.

26:10 When the leaders of Judah heard what had happened, they hurried from the royal palace to the Temple and took their places at the New Gate.

26:11 Then the priests and the prophets said to the leaders and to the people, "This man deserves to be sentenced to death because he has spoken against our city. You heard him with your own ears."

26:12 Then I said, "The Lord sent me to proclaim everything that you heard me say against this Temple and against this city.

26:13 You must change the way you are living and the things you are doing, and must obey the Lord your God. If you do, he will change his mind about the destruction that he said he would bring on you.

26:14 As for me, I am in your power! Do with me whatever you think is fair and right.

26:15 But be sure of this: if you kill me, you and the people of this city will be guilty of killing an innocent man, because it is the Lord who sent me to give you this warning."

26:16 Then the leaders and the people said to the priests and the prophets, "This man spoke to us in the name of the Lord our God; he should not be put to death."

26:17 After that, some of the elders stood up and said to the people who had gathered,

26:18 "When Hezekiah was king of Judah, the prophet Micah of Moresheth told all the people that the Lord Almighty had said, /"Zion will be plowed like a field; /Jerusalem will become a pile of ruins, /and the Temple hill will become a forest.'

26:19 King Hezekiah and the people of Judah did not put Micah to death. Instead, Hezekiah honored the Lord and tried to win his favor. And the Lord changed his mind about the disaster that he said he would bring on them. Now we are about to bring a terrible disaster on ourselves."

26:20 (There was another man, Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath Jearim, who spoke in the name of the Lord against this city and nation just as Jeremiah did.

26:21 When King Jehoiakim and his soldiers and officials heard what Uriah had said, the king tried to have him killed. But Uriah heard about it; so he fled in terror and escaped to Egypt.

26:22 King Jehoiakim, however, sent Elnathan son of Achbor and some other men to Egypt to get Uriah.

26:23 They brought him back to King Jehoiakim, who had him killed and his body thrown into the public burial ground.)

26:24 But because I had the support of Ahikam son of Shaphan, I was not handed over to the people and killed.
