17:17 その後、この家の女主人である彼女の息子が病気にかかった。病状は非常に重く、ついに息を引き取った。

17:18 彼女はエリヤに言った。「神の人よ、あなたはわたしにどんなかかわりがあるのでしょうか。あなたはわたしに罪を思い起こさせ、息子を死なせるために来られたのですか。」

17:19 エリヤは、「あなたの息子をよこしなさい」と言って、彼女のふところから息子を受け取り、自分のいる階上の部屋に抱いて行って寝台に寝かせた。

17:20 彼は主に向かって祈った。「主よ、わが神よ、あなたは、わたしが身を寄せているこのやもめにさえ災いをもたらし、その息子の命をお取りになるのですか。」

17:21 彼は子供の上に三度身を重ねてから、また主に向かって祈った。「主よ、わが神よ、この子の命を元に返してください。」

17:22 主は、エリヤの声に耳を傾け、その子の命を元にお返しになった。子供は生き返った。

17:23 エリヤは、その子を連れて家の階上の部屋から降りて来て、母親に渡し、「見なさい。あなたの息子は生きている」と言った。

17:24 女はエリヤに言った。「今わたしは分かりました。あなたはまことに神の人です。あなたの口にある主の言葉は真実です。」

17:17 Some time later the widow's son got sick; he got worse and worse, and finally he died.

17:18 She said to Elijah, "Man of God, why did you do this to me? Did you come here to remind God of my sins and so cause my son's death?"

17:19 "Give the boy to me," Elijah said. He took the boy from her arms, carried him upstairs to the room where he was staying, and laid him on the bed.

17:20 Then he prayed aloud, "O Lord my God, why have you done such a terrible thing to this widow? She has been kind enough to take care of me, and now you kill her son!"

17:21 Then Elijah stretched himself out on the boy three times and prayed, "O Lord my God, restore this child to life!"

17:22 The Lord answered Elijah's prayer; the child started breathing again and revived.

17:23 Elijah took the boy back downstairs to his mother and said to her, "Look, your son is alive!"

17:24 She answered, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the Lord really speaks through you!"
