11:1 ある病人がいた。マリアとその姉妹マルタの村、ベタニアの出身で、ラザロといった。

11:2 このマリアは主に香油を塗り、髪の毛で主の足をぬぐった女である。その兄弟ラザロが病気であった。

11:3 姉妹たちはイエスのもとに人をやって、「主よ、あなたの愛しておられる者が病気なのです」と言わせた。

11:4 イエスは、それを聞いて言われた。「この病気は死で終わるものではない。神の栄光のためである。神の子がそれによって栄光を受けるのである。」

11:5 イエスは、マルタとその姉妹とラザロを愛しておられた。

11:6 ラザロが病気だと聞いてからも、なお二日間同じ所に滞在された。

11:7 それから、弟子たちに言われた。「もう一度、ユダヤに行こう。」

11:8 弟子たちは言った。「ラビ、ユダヤ人たちがついこの間もあなたを石で打ち殺そうとしたのに、またそこへ行かれるのですか。」

11:9 イエスはお答えになった。「昼間は十二時間あるではないか。昼のうちに歩けば、つまずくことはない。この世の光を見ているからだ。

11:10 しかし、夜歩けば、つまずく。その人の内に光がないからである。」

11:11 こうお話しになり、また、その後で言われた。「わたしたちの友ラザロが眠っている。しかし、わたしは彼を起こしに行く。」

11:12 弟子たちは、「主よ、眠っているのであれば、助かるでしょう」と言った。

11:13 イエスはラザロの死について話されたのだが、弟子たちは、ただ眠りについて話されたものと思ったのである。

11:14 そこでイエスは、はっきりと言われた。「ラザロは死んだのだ。

11:15 わたしがその場に居合わせなかったのは、あなたがたにとってよかった。あなたがたが信じるようになるためである。さあ、彼のところへ行こう。」

11:16 すると、ディディモと呼ばれるトマスが、仲間の弟子たちに、「わたしたちも行って、一緒に死のうではないか」と言った。

◆イエスは復活と命

11:17 さて、イエスが行って御覧になると、ラザロは墓に葬られて既に四日もたっていた。

11:18 ベタニアはエルサレムに近く、十五スタディオンほどのところにあった。

11:19 マルタとマリアのところには、多くのユダヤ人が、兄弟ラザロのことで慰めに来ていた。

11:20 マルタは、イエスが来られたと聞いて、迎えに行ったが、マリアは家の中に座っていた。

11:21 マルタはイエスに言った。「主よ、もしここにいてくださいましたら、わたしの兄弟は死ななかったでしょうに。

11:22 しかし、あなたが神にお願いになることは何でも神はかなえてくださると、わたしは今でも承知しています。」

11:23 イエスが、「あなたの兄弟は復活する」と言われると、

11:24 マルタは、「終わりの日の復活の時に復活することは存じております」と言った。

11:25 イエスは言われた。「わたしは復活であり、命である。わたしを信じる者は、死んでも生きる。

11:26 生きていてわたしを信じる者はだれも、決して死ぬことはない。このことを信じるか。」

11:27 マルタは言った。「はい、主よ、あなたが世に来られるはずの神の子、メシアであるとわたしは信じております。」

◆イエス、涙を流す

11:28 マルタは、こう言ってから、家に帰って姉妹のマリアを呼び、「先生がいらして、あなたをお呼びです」と耳打ちした。

11:29 マリアはこれを聞くと、すぐに立ち上がり、イエスのもとに行った。

11:30 イエスはまだ村には入らず、マルタが出迎えた場所におられた。

11:31 家の中でマリアと一緒にいて、慰めていたユダヤ人たちは、彼女が急に立ち上がって出て行くのを見て、墓に泣きに行くのだろうと思い、後を追った。

11:32 マリアはイエスのおられる所に来て、イエスを見るなり足もとにひれ伏し、「主よ、もしここにいてくださいましたら、わたしの兄弟は死ななかったでしょうに」と言った。

11:33 イエスは、彼女が泣き、一緒に来たユダヤ人たちも泣いているのを見て、心に憤りを覚え、興奮して、

11:34 言われた。「どこに葬ったのか。」彼らは、「主よ、来て、御覧ください」と言った。

11:35 イエスは涙を流された。

11:36 ユダヤ人たちは、「御覧なさい、どんなにラザロを愛しておられたことか」と言った。

11:37 しかし、中には、「盲人の目を開けたこの人も、ラザロが死なないようにはできなかったのか」と言う者もいた。

◆イエス、ラザロを生き返らせる

11:38 イエスは、再び心に憤りを覚えて、墓に来られた。墓は洞穴で、石でふさがれていた。

11:39 イエスが、「その石を取りのけなさい」と言われると、死んだラザロの姉妹マルタが、「主よ、四日もたっていますから、もうにおいます」と言った。

11:40 イエスは、「もし信じるなら、神の栄光が見られると、言っておいたではないか」と言われた。

11:41 人々が石を取りのけると、イエスは天を仰いで言われた。「父よ、わたしの願いを聞き入れてくださって感謝します。

11:42 わたしの願いをいつも聞いてくださることを、わたしは知っています。しかし、わたしがこう言うのは、周りにいる群衆のためです。あなたがわたしをお遣わしになったことを、彼らに信じさせるためです。」

11:43 こう言ってから、「ラザロ、出て来なさい」と大声で叫ばれた。

11:44 すると、死んでいた人が、手と足を布で巻かれたまま出て来た。顔は覆いで包まれていた。イエスは人々に、「ほどいてやって、行かせなさい」と言われた。

◆イエスを殺す計画

11:45 マリアのところに来て、イエスのなさったことを目撃したユダヤ人の多くは、イエスを信じた。

11:46 しかし、中には、ファリサイ派の人々のもとへ行き、イエスのなさったことを告げる者もいた。

11:47 そこで、祭司長たちとファリサイ派の人々は最高法院を召集して言った。「この男は多くのしるしを行っているが、どうすればよいか。

11:48 このままにしておけば、皆が彼を信じるようになる。そして、ローマ人が来て、我々の神殿も国民も滅ぼしてしまうだろう。」

11:49 彼らの中の一人で、その年の大祭司であったカイアファが言った。「あなたがたは何も分かっていない。

11:50 一人の人間が民の代わりに死に、国民全体が滅びないで済む方が、あなたがたに好都合だとは考えないのか。」

11:51 これは、カイアファが自分の考えから話したのではない。その年の大祭司であったので預言して、イエスが国民のために死ぬ、と言ったのである。

11:52 国民のためばかりでなく、散らされている神の子たちを一つに集めるためにも死ぬ、と言ったのである。

11:53 この日から、彼らはイエスを殺そうとたくらんだ。

11:54 それで、イエスはもはや公然とユダヤ人たちの間を歩くことはなく、そこを去り、荒れ野に近い地方のエフライムという町に行き、弟子たちとそこに滞在された。

11:55 さて、ユダヤ人の過越祭が近づいた。多くの人が身を清めるために、過越祭の前に地方からエルサレムへ上った。

11:56 彼らはイエスを捜し、神殿の境内で互いに言った。「どう思うか。あの人はこの祭りには来ないのだろうか。」

11:57 祭司長たちとファリサイ派の人々は、イエスの居どころが分かれば届け出よと、命令を出していた。イエスを逮捕するためである。

ＴＥＶ ヨハ 11:1-57

11:1 A man named Lazarus, who lived in Bethany, became sick. Bethany was the town where Mary and her sister Martha lived.

11:2 (This Mary was the one who poured the perfume on the Lord's feet and wiped them with her hair; it was her brother Lazarus who was sick.)

11:3 The sisters sent Jesus a message: "Lord, your dear friend is sick."

11:4 When Jesus heard it, he said, "The final result of this sickness will not be the death of Lazarus; this has happened in order to bring glory to God, and it will be the means by which the Son of God will receive glory."

11:5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

11:6 Yet when he received the news that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was for two more days.

11:7 Then he said to the disciples, "Let us go back to Judea."

11:8 "Teacher," the disciples answered, "just a short time ago the people there wanted to stone you; and are you planning to go back?"

11:9 Jesus said, "A day has twelve hours, doesn't it? So those who walk in broad daylight do not stumble, for they see the light of this world.

11:10 But if they walk during the night they stumble, because they have no light."

11:11 Jesus said this and then added, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I will go and wake him up."

11:12 The disciples answered, "If he is asleep, Lord, he will get well."

11:13 Jesus meant that Lazarus had died, but they thought he meant natural sleep.

11:14 So Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead,

11:15 but for your sake I am glad that I was not with him, so that you will believe. Let us go to him."

11:16 Thomas (called the Twin) said to his fellow disciples, "Let us all go along with the Teacher, so that we may die with him!"

11:17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had been buried four days before.

11:18 Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem,

11:19 and many Judeans had come to see Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother's death.

11:20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed in the house.

11:21 Martha said to Jesus, "If you had been here, Lord, my brother would not have died!

11:22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask him for."

11:23 "Your brother will rise to life," Jesus told her.

11:24 "I know," she replied, "that he will rise to life on the last day."

11:25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me will live, even though they die;

11:26 and those who live and believe in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

11:27 "Yes, Lord!" she answered. "I do believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who was to come into the world."

11:28 After Martha said this, she went back and called her sister Mary privately. "The Teacher is here," she told her, "and is asking for you."

11:29 When Mary heard this, she got up and hurried out to meet him.

11:30 (Jesus had not yet arrived in the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him.)

11:31 The people who were in the house with Mary comforting her followed her when they saw her get up and hurry out. They thought that she was going to the grave to weep there.

11:32 Mary arrived where Jesus was, and as soon as she saw him, she fell at his feet. "Lord," she said, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died!"

11:33 Jesus saw her weeping, and he saw how the people with her were weeping also; his heart was touched, and he was deeply moved.

11:34 "Where have you buried him?" he asked them. /"Come and see, Lord," they answered.

11:35 Jesus wept.

11:36 "See how much he loved him!" the people said.

11:37 But some of them said, "He gave sight to the blind man, didn't he? Could he not have kept Lazarus from dying?"

11:38 Deeply moved once more, Jesus went to the tomb, which was a cave with a stone placed at the entrance.

11:39 "Take the stone away!" Jesus ordered. /Martha, the dead man's sister, answered, "There will be a bad smell, Lord. He has been buried four days!"

11:40 Jesus said to her, "Didn't I tell you that you would see God's glory if you believed?"

11:41 They took the stone away. Jesus looked up and said, "I thank you, Father, that you listen to me.

11:42 I know that you always listen to me, but I say this for the sake of the people here, so that they will believe that you sent me."

11:43 After he had said this, he called out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"

11:44 He came out, his hands and feet wrapped in grave cloths, and with a cloth around his face. "Untie him," Jesus told them, "and let him go."

11:45 Many of the people who had come to visit Mary saw what Jesus did, and they believed in him.

11:46 But some of them returned to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

11:47 So the Pharisees and the chief priests met with the Council and said, "What shall we do? Look at all the miracles this man is performing!

11:48 If we let him go on in this way, everyone will believe in him, and the Roman authorities will take action and destroy our Temple and our nation!"

11:49 One of them, named Caiaphas, who was High Priest that year, said, "What fools you are!

11:50 Don't you realize that it is better for you to have one man die for the people, instead of having the whole nation destroyed?"

11:51 Actually, he did not say this of his own accord; rather, as he was High Priest that year, he was prophesying that Jesus was going to die for the Jewish people,

11:52 and not only for them, but also to bring together into one body all the scattered people of God.

11:53 From that day on the Jewish authorities made plans to kill Jesus.

11:54 So Jesus did not travel openly in Judea, but left and went to a place near the desert, to a town named Ephraim, where he stayed with the disciples.

11:55 The time for the Passover Festival was near, and many people went up from the country to Jerusalem to perform the ritual of purification before the festival.

11:56 They were looking for Jesus, and as they gathered in the Temple, they asked one another, "What do you think? Surely he will not come to the festival, will he?"

11:57 The chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where Jesus was, he must report it, so that they could arrest him.
