1:17 御子はすべてのものよりも先におられ、すべてのものは御子によって支えられています。

1:18 また、御子はその体である教会の頭です。御子は初めの者、死者の中から最初に生まれた方です。こうして、すべてのことにおいて第一の者となられたのです。

1:19 神は、御心のままに、満ちあふれるものを余すところなく御子の内に宿らせ、

1:20 その十字架の血によって平和を打ち立て、地にあるものであれ、天にあるものであれ、万物をただ御子によって、御自分と和解させられました。

1:17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.

1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

1:19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell,

1:20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.

1:17 Christ existed before all things, and in union with him all things have their proper place.

1:18 He is the head of his body, the church; he is the source of the body's life. He is the first-born Son, who was raised from death, in order that he alone might have the first place in all things.

1:19 For it was by God's own decision that the Son has in himself the full nature of God.

1:20 Through the Son, then, God decided to bring the whole universe back to himself. God made peace through his Son's blood on the cross and so brought back to himself all things, both on earth and in heaven.
