you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven
against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are
entering to go in.
23:14 "Woe to you,
scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows' houses, and for a
pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.
23:15 "Woe to you, scribes
and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte,
and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.
23:16 "Woe to you,
blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever
swears by the gold of the temple, he is obliged to perform it.'
23:17 "Fools and
blind! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold?
23:18 "And, 'Whoever
swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on
it, he is obliged to perform it.'
23:19 "Fools and
blind! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift?
23:20 "Therefore he
who swears by the altar, swears by it and by all things on it.
23:21 "He who swears
by the temple, swears by it and by Him who dwells in it.
23:22 "And he who
swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him who sits on it.
23:23 "Woe to you,
scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and
cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy
and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.
23:24 "Blind guides,
who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!
23:25 "Woe to you,
scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and
dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence.
23:26 "Blind
Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of
them may be clean also.
23:27 "Woe to you,
scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which
indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men's bones and
all uncleanness.
23:28 "Even so you
also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy
and lawlessness.

for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You lock the door
to the Kingdom of heaven in people's faces, but you yourselves don't go in, nor
do you allow in those who are trying to enter!
23:15 "How terrible
for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You sail the seas
and cross whole countries to win one convert; and when you succeed, you make
him twice as deserving of going to hell as you yourselves are!
23:16 "How terrible
for you, blind guides! You teach, "If someone swears by the Temple, he
isn't bound by his vow; but if he swears by the gold in the Temple, he is
bound.'
23:17 Blind fools! Which
is more important, the gold or the Temple which makes the gold holy?
23:18 You also teach,
"If someone swears by the altar, he isn't bound by his vow; but if he
swears by the gift on the altar, he is bound.'
23:19 How blind you are!
Which is the more important, the gift or the altar which makes the gift holy?
23:20 So then, when a
person swears by the altar, he is swearing by it and by all the gifts on it;
23:21 and when he swears
by the Temple, he is swearing by it and by God, who lives there;
23:22 and when someone
swears by heaven, he is swearing by God's throne and by him who sits on it.
23:23 "How terrible
for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You give to God one
tenth even of the seasoning herbs, such as mint, dill, and cumin, but you
neglect to obey the really important teachings of the Law, such as justice and
mercy and honesty. These you should practice, without neglecting the others.
23:24 Blind guides! You
strain a fly out of your drink, but swallow a camel!
23:25 "How terrible
for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You clean the
outside of your cup and plate, while the inside is full of what you have gotten
by violence and selfishness.
23:26 Blind Pharisee!
Clean what is inside the cup first, and then the outside will be clean too!
23:27 "How terrible
for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You are like
whitewashed tombs, which look fine on the outside but are full of bones and
decaying corpses on the inside.
23:28 In the same way, on
the outside you appear good to everybody, but inside you are full of hypocrisy
and sins.
23:29 "How terrible
for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You make fine tombs
for the prophets and decorate the monuments of those who lived good lives;
