9:6 ところで、神の言葉は決して効力を失ったわけではありません。イスラエルから出た者が皆、イスラエル人ということにはならず、

9:7 また、アブラハムの子孫だからといって、皆がその子供ということにはならない。かえって、「イサクから生まれる者が、あなたの子孫と呼ばれる。」

9:8 すなわち、肉による子供が神の子供なのではなく、約束に従って生まれる子供が、子孫と見なされるのです。

9:9 約束の言葉は、「来年の今ごろに、わたしは来る。そして、サラには男の子が生まれる」というものでした。

9:10 それだけではなく、リベカが、一人の人、つまりわたしたちの父イサクによって身ごもった場合にも、同じことが言えます。

9:11 -12その子供たちがまだ生まれもせず、善いことも悪いこともしていないのに、「兄は弟に仕えるであろう」とリベカに告げられました。それは、自由な選びによる神の計画が人の行いにはよらず、お召しになる方によって進められるためでした。

9:13 「わたしはヤコブを愛し、／エサウを憎んだ」と書いてあるとおりです。

9:14 では、どういうことになるのか。神に不義があるのか。決してそうではない。

9:15 神はモーセに、／「わたしは自分が憐れもうと思う者を憐れみ、／慈しもうと思う者を慈しむ」と言っておられます。

9:16 従って、これは、人の意志や努力ではなく、神の憐れみによるものです。

9:17 聖書にはファラオについて、「わたしがあなたを立てたのは、あなたによってわたしの力を現し、わたしの名を全世界に告げ知らせるためである」と書いてあります。

9:18 このように、神は御自分が憐れみたいと思う者を憐れみ、かたくなにしたいと思う者をかたくなにされるのです。

◆神の怒りと憐れみ

9:19 ところで、あなたは言うでしょう。「ではなぜ、神はなおも人を責められるのだろうか。だれが神の御心に逆らうことができようか」と。

9:6 I am not saying that the promise of God has failed; for not all the people of Israel are the people of God.

9:7 Nor are all of Abraham's descendants the children of God. God said to Abraham, "It is through Isaac that you will have the descendants I promised you."

9:8 This means that the children born in the usual way are not the children of God; instead, the children born as a result of God's promise are regarded as the true descendants.

9:9 For God's promise was made in these words: "At the right time I will come back, and Sarah will have a son."

9:10 And this is not all. For Rebecca's two sons had the same father, our ancestor Isaac.

9:11 -12 But in order that the choice of one son might be completely the result of God's own purpose, God said to her, "The older will serve the younger." He said this before they were born, before they had done anything either good or bad; so God's choice was based on his call, and not on anything they had done.

9:12

9:13 As the scripture says, "I loved Jacob, but I hated Esau."

9:14 Shall we say, then, that God is unjust? Not at all.

9:15 For he said to Moses, "I will have mercy on anyone I wish; I will take pity on anyone I wish."

9:16 So then, everything depends, not on what we humans want or do, but only on God's mercy.

9:17 For the scripture says to the king of Egypt, "I made you king in order to use you to show my power and to spread my fame over the whole world."

9:18 So then, God has mercy on anyone he wishes, and he makes stubborn anyone he wishes.
