1:18 十字架の言葉は、滅んでいく者にとっては愚かなものですが、わたしたち救われる者には神の力です。

1:19 それは、こう書いてあるからです。「わたしは知恵ある者の知恵を滅ぼし、／賢い者の賢さを意味のないものにする。」

1:20 知恵のある人はどこにいる。学者はどこにいる。この世の論客はどこにいる。神は世の知恵を愚かなものにされたではないか。

1:21 世は自分の知恵で神を知ることができませんでした。それは神の知恵にかなっています。そこで神は、宣教という愚かな手段によって信じる者を救おうと、お考えになったのです。

1:22 ユダヤ人はしるしを求め、ギリシア人は知恵を探しますが、

1:23 わたしたちは、十字架につけられたキリストを宣べ伝えています。すなわち、ユダヤ人にはつまずかせるもの、異邦人には愚かなものですが、

1:24 ユダヤ人であろうがギリシア人であろうが、召された者には、神の力、神の知恵であるキリストを宣べ伝えているのです。

1:25 神の愚かさは人よりも賢く、神の弱さは人よりも強いからです。

1:18 For the message about Christ's death on the cross is nonsense to those who are being lost; but for us who are being saved it is God's power.

1:19 The scripture says, /"I will destroy the wisdom of the wise /and set aside the understanding of the scholars."

1:20 So then, where does that leave the wise? or the scholars? or the skillful debaters of this world? God has shown that this world's wisdom is foolishness!

1:21 For God in his wisdom made it impossible for people to know him by means of their own wisdom. Instead, by means of the so-called "foolish" message we preach, God decided to save those who believe.

1:22 Jews want miracles for proof, and Greeks look for wisdom.

1:23 As for us, we proclaim the crucified Christ, a message that is offensive to the Jews and nonsense to the Gentiles;

1:24 but for those whom God has called, both Jews and Gentiles, this message is Christ, who is the power of God and the wisdom of God.

1:25 For what seems to be God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and what seems to be God's weakness is stronger than human strength.
