18:13 まず、アンナスのところへ連れて行った。彼が、その年の大祭司カイアファのしゅうとだったからである。

18:14 一人の人間が民の代わりに死ぬ方が好都合だと、ユダヤ人たちに助言したのは、このカイアファであった。

◆ペトロ、イエスを知らないと言う

18:15 シモン・ペトロともう一人の弟子は、イエスに従った。この弟子は大祭司の知り合いだったので、イエスと一緒に大祭司の屋敷の中庭に入ったが、

18:16 ペトロは門の外に立っていた。大祭司の知り合いである、そのもう一人の弟子は、出て来て門番の女に話し、ペトロを中に入れた。

18:17 門番の女中はペトロに言った。「あなたも、あの人の弟子の一人ではありませんか。」ペトロは、「違う」と言った。

18:18 僕や下役たちは、寒かったので炭火をおこし、そこに立って火にあたっていた。ペトロも彼らと一緒に立って、火にあたっていた。

◆大祭司、イエスを尋問する

18:19 大祭司はイエスに弟子のことや教えについて尋ねた。

18:20 イエスは答えられた。「わたしは、世に向かって公然と話した。わたしはいつも、ユダヤ人が皆集まる会堂や神殿の境内で教えた。ひそかに話したことは何もない。

18:21 なぜ、わたしを尋問するのか。わたしが何を話したかは、それを聞いた人々に尋ねるがよい。その人々がわたしの話したことを知っている。」

18:22 イエスがこう言われると、そばにいた下役の一人が、「大祭司に向かって、そんな返事のしかたがあるか」と言って、イエスを平手で打った。

18:12 Then the Roman soldiers with their commanding officer and the Jewish guards arrested Jesus, tied him up,

18:13 and took him first to Annas. He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was High Priest that year.

18:14 It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jewish authorities that it was better that one man should die for all the people.

18:15 Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. That other disciple was well known to the High Priest, so he went with Jesus into the courtyard of the High Priest's house,

18:16 while Peter stayed outside by the gate. Then the other disciple went back out, spoke to the girl at the gate, and brought Peter inside.

18:17 The girl at the gate said to Peter, "Aren't you also one of the disciples of that man?" /"No, I am not," answered Peter.

18:18 It was cold, so the servants and guards had built a charcoal fire and were standing around it, warming themselves. So Peter went over and stood with them, warming himself.

18:19 The High Priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.

18:20 Jesus answered, "I have always spoken publicly to everyone; all my teaching was done in the synagogues and in the Temple, where all the people come together. I have never said anything in secret.

18:21 Why, then, do you question me? Question the people who heard me. Ask them what I told them-they know what I said."

18:22 When Jesus said this, one of the guards there slapped him and said, "How dare you talk like that to the High Priest!"
