18:28 人々は、イエスをカイアファのところから総督官邸に連れて行った。明け方であった。しかし、彼らは自分では官邸に入らなかった。汚れないで過越の食事をするためである。

18:29 そこで、ピラトが彼らのところへ出て来て、「どういう罪でこの男を訴えるのか」と言った。

18:30 彼らは答えて、「この男が悪いことをしていなかったら、あなたに引き渡しはしなかったでしょう」と言った。

18:31 ピラトが、「あなたたちが引き取って、自分たちの律法に従って裁け」と言うと、ユダヤ人たちは、「わたしたちには、人を死刑にする権限がありません」と言った。

18:32 それは、御自分がどのような死を遂げるかを示そうとして、イエスの言われた言葉が実現するためであった。

18:33 そこで、ピラトはもう一度官邸に入り、イエスを呼び出して、「お前がユダヤ人の王なのか」と言った。

18:34 イエスはお答えになった。「あなたは自分の考えで、そう言うのですか。それとも、ほかの者がわたしについて、あなたにそう言ったのですか。」

18:35 ピラトは言い返した。「わたしはユダヤ人なのか。お前の同胞や祭司長たちが、お前をわたしに引き渡したのだ。いったい何をしたのか。」

18:36 イエスはお答えになった。「わたしの国は、この世には属していない。もし、わたしの国がこの世に属していれば、わたしがユダヤ人に引き渡されないように、部下が戦ったことだろう。しかし、実際、わたしの国はこの世には属していない。」

18:37 そこでピラトが、「それでは、やはり王なのか」と言うと、イエスはお答えになった。「わたしが王だとは、あなたが言っていることです。わたしは真理について証しをするために生まれ、そのためにこの世に来た。真理に属する人は皆、わたしの声を聞く。」

18:38 ピラトは言った。「真理とは何か。」

18:28 Early in the morning Jesus was taken from Caiaphas' house to the governor's palace. The Jewish authorities did not go inside the palace, for they wanted to keep themselves ritually clean, in order to be able to eat the Passover meal.

18:29 So Pilate went outside to them and asked, "What do you accuse this man of?"

18:30 Their answer was, "We would not have brought him to you if he had not committed a crime."

18:31 Pilate said to them, "Then you yourselves take him and try him according to your own law." /They replied, "We are not allowed to put anyone to death."

18:32 (This happened in order to make come true what Jesus had said when he indicated the kind of death he would die.)

18:33 Pilate went back into the palace and called Jesus. "Are you the king of the Jews?" he asked him.

18:34 Jesus answered, "Does this question come from you or have others told you about me?"

18:35 Pilate replied, "Do you think I am a Jew? It was your own people and the chief priests who handed you over to me. What have you done?"

18:36 Jesus said, "My kingdom does not belong to this world; if my kingdom belonged to this world, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish authorities. No, my kingdom does not belong here!"

18:37 So Pilate asked him, "Are you a king, then?" /Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. I was born and came into the world for this one purpose, to speak about the truth. Whoever belongs to the truth listens to me."

18:38 "And what is truth?" Pilate asked.
