23:2 「律法学者とパリサイ人とは、モーセの座にすわっている。

23:3 ですから、彼らがあなたがたに言うことはみな、行ない、守りなさい。けれども、彼らの行ないをまねてはいけません。彼らは言うことは言うが、実行しないからです。
23:4 また、彼らは重い荷をくくって、人の肩に載せ、自分はそれに指一本さわろうとはしません。
23:5 彼らのしていることはみな、人に見せるためです。経札の幅を広くしたり、衣のふさを長くしたりするのもそうです。
23:6 また、宴会の上座や会堂の上席が大好きで、
23:7 広場であいさつされたり、人から先生と呼ばれたりすることが好きです。

23:1 Then Jesus spoke to
the multitudes and to His disciples,
23:2 saying: "The
scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat.
23:3 "Therefore
whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according
to their works; for they say, and do not do.
23:4 "For they bind
heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they
themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
23:5 "But all their
works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge
the borders of their garments.
23:6 "They love the
best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,
23:7 "greetings in
the marketplaces, and to be called by men, 'Rabbi, Rabbi.'
23:8 "But you, do
not be called 'Rabbi'; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all
brethren.
23:9 "Do not call
anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.
23:10 "And do not be
called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ.
23:11 "But he who is
greatest among you shall be your servant.
23:12 "And whoever
exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

23:1 Then Jesus spoke to
the crowds and to his disciples.
23:2 "The teachers
of the Law and the Pharisees are the authorized interpreters of Moses' Law.
23:3 So you must obey and
follow everything they tell you to do; do not, however, imitate their actions,
because they don't practice what they preach.
23:4 They tie onto
people's backs loads that are heavy and hard to carry, yet they aren't willing
even to lift a finger to help them carry those loads.
23:5 They do everything
so that people will see them. Look at the straps with scripture verses on them
which they wear on their foreheads and arms, and notice how large they are!
Notice also how long are the tassels on their cloaks!
23:6 They love the best
places at feasts and the reserved seats in the synagogues;
23:7 they love to be
greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to have people call them
"Teacher.'
23:8 You must not be
called "Teacher,' because you are all equal and have only one Teacher.
23:9 And you must not
call anyone here on earth "Father,' because you have only the one Father
in heaven.
23:10 Nor should you be
called "Leader,' because your one and only leader is the Messiah.
23:11 The greatest one
among you must be your servant.
23:12 Whoever makes
himself great will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be made great.
