「イスラエルの罪(2)」

2章14-37

2:14 イスラエルは奴隷なのか／家に生まれた僕であろうか。それなのに、どうして捕らわれの身になったのか。

2:15 若獅子が彼に向かってほえ／うなり声をあげた。彼の地は荒れ地とされ／町々は焼き払われて／住む人もなくなった。

2:16 メンフィスとタフパンヘスの人々も／あなたの頭をそり上げる。

2:17 あなたの神なる主が、旅路を導かれたとき／あなたが主を捨てたので／このことがあなたの身に及んだのではないか。

2:18 それなのに、今あなたはエジプトへ行って／ナイルの水を飲もうとする。それは、一体どうしてか。また、アッシリアへ行って／ユーフラテスの水を飲もうとする。それは、一体どうしてか。

2:19 あなたの犯した悪が、あなたを懲らしめ／あなたの背信が、あなたを責めている。あなたが、わたしを畏れず／あなたの神である主を捨てたことが／いかに悪く、苦いことであるかを／味わい知るがよいと／万軍の主なる神は言われる。

2:20 あなたは久しい昔に軛を折り／手綱を振り切って／「わたしは仕えることはしない」と言った。あなたは高い丘の上／緑の木の下と見ればどこにでも／身を横たえて遊女となる。

2:21 わたしはあなたを、甘いぶどうを実らせる／確かな種として植えたのに／どうして、わたしに背いて／悪い野ぶどうに変わり果てたのか。

2:22 たとえ灰汁で体を洗い／多くの石灰を使っても／わたしの目には／罪があなたに染みついていると／主なる神は言われる。

2:23 どうして、お前は言い張るのか／わたしは汚れていない／バアルの後を追ったことはない、と。見よ、谷でのお前のふるまいを／思ってみよ、何をしたのか。お前は、素早い雌のらくだのように／道をさまよい歩く。

2:24 また、荒れ野に慣れた雌ろばのように／息遣いも荒く、欲情にあえいでいる。誰がその情欲を制しえよう。彼女に会いたければ、だれも苦労はしない。その月になれば、見つけ出せる。

2:25 素足になることを避け／喉が渇かぬようにせよ、と言われても／お前は答えて言う。「いいえ、止めても無駄です。わたしは異国の男を慕い／その後を追います」と。

2:26 盗人が捕らえられて辱めを受けるように／イスラエルの家も辱めを受ける／その王、高官、祭司、預言者らも共に。

2:27 彼らは木に向かって、「わたしの父」と言い／石に向かって、「わたしを産んだ母」と言う。わたしに顔を向けず、かえって背を向け／しかも、災難に遭えば／「立ち上がって／わたしたちをお救いください」と言う。

2:28 お前が造った神々はどこにいるのか。彼らが立ち上がればよいのだ／災難に遭ったお前を救いうるのならば。ユダよ、お前の神々は／町の数ほどあるではないか。

2:29 なぜ、わたしと争い／わたしに背き続けるのか、と主は言われる。

2:30 わたしはお前たちの子らを打ったが／無駄であった。彼らは懲らしめを受け入れなかった。獅子が滅ぼし尽くすように／お前たちは預言者を剣の餌食とした。

2:31 この世代の者よ、見よ、これは主の言葉だ。わたしはイスラエルにとって荒れ野なのか。深い闇の地なのか。どうして、わたしの民は言うのか。「迷い出てしまったからには／あなたのもとには帰りません」と。

2:32 おとめがその身を飾るものを／花嫁が晴れ着の帯を忘れるだろうか。しかし、わたしの民はわたしを忘れ／数えきれない月日が過ぎた。

2:33 なんと巧みにお前は情事を求めることか。悪い女たちにさえ、その道を教えるほどだ。

2:34 お前の着物の裾には／罪のない貧しい者を殺した血が染みついている。それは、盗みに押し入ったときに／付いたものではない。それにもかかわらず

2:35 「わたしには罪がない」とか／「主の怒りはわたしから去った」とお前は言う。だが、見よ。「わたしは罪を犯していない」と言うなら／お前は裁きの座に引き出される。

2:36 なんと軽率にお前は道を変えるのか。アッシリアによって辱められたように／エジプトにも辱められるであろう。

2:37 そこからも、お前は両手を頭に置いて出て来る。主はお前が頼りにしているものを退けられる。彼らに頼ろうとしても成功するはずがない。

2:14 "Israel is not a slave; /he was not born into slavery. /Why then do his enemies hunt him down?

2:15 They have roared at him like lions; /they have made his land a desert, /and his towns lie in ruins, completely abandoned.

2:16 Yes, the people of Memphis and Tahpanhes /have cracked his skull.

2:17 Israel, you brought this on yourself! /You deserted me, the Lord your God, /while I was leading you along the way.

2:18 What do you think you will gain by going to Egypt /to drink water from the Nile? /What do you think you will gain by going to Assyria /to drink water from the Euphrates?

2:19 Your own evil will punish you, /and your turning from me will condemn you. /You will learn how bitter and wrong it is /to abandon me, the Lord your God, /and no longer to remain faithful to me. /I, the Sovereign Lord Almighty, have spoken."

2:20 The Sovereign Lord says, /"Israel, long ago you rejected my authority; /you refused to obey me and worship me. /On every high hill /and under every green tree /you worshiped fertility gods.

2:21 I planted you like a choice vine /from the very best seed. /But look what you have become! /You are like a rotten, worthless vine.

2:22 Even if you washed with the strongest soap, /I would still see the stain of your guilt.

2:23 How can you say you have not defiled yourself, /that you have never worshiped Baal? /Look how you sinned in the valley; /see what you have done. /You are like a wild camel in heat, /running around loose,

2:24 rushing into the desert. /When she is in heat, who can control her? /No male that wants her has to trouble himself; /she is always available in mating season.

2:25 Israel, don't wear your feet out, /or let your throat become dry /from chasing after other gods. /But you say, "No! I can't turn back. /I have loved foreign gods /and will go after them."'

2:26 The Lord says, "Just as a thief is disgraced when caught, so all you people of Israel will be disgraced-your kings and officials, your priests and prophets.

2:27 You will all be disgraced-you that say that a tree is your father and that a rock is your mother. This will happen because you turned away from me instead of turning to me. But when you are in trouble, you ask me to come and save you.

2:28 "Where are the gods that you made for yourselves? When you are in trouble, let them save you-if they can! Judah, you have as many gods as you have cities.

2:29 What is your complaint? Why have you rebelled against me?

2:30 I punished you, but it did no good; you would not let me correct you. Like a raging lion, you have murdered your prophets.

2:31 People of Israel, listen to what I am saying. Have I been like a desert to you, like a dark and dangerous land? Why, then, do you say that you will do as you please, that you will never come back to me?

2:32 Does a young woman forget her jewelry, or a bride her wedding dress? But my people have forgotten me for more days than can be counted.

2:33 You certainly know how to chase after lovers. Even the worst of women can learn from you.

2:34 Your clothes are stained with the blood of the poor and innocent, not with the blood of burglars. /"But in spite of all this,

2:35 you say, "I am innocent; surely the Lord is no longer angry with me.' But I, the Lord, will punish you because you deny that you have sinned.

2:36 You have cheapened yourself by turning to the gods of other nations. You will be disappointed by Egypt, just as you were by Assyria.

2:37 You will turn away from Egypt, hanging your head in shame. I, the Lord, have rejected those you trust; you will not gain anything from them."
