16:16 「しばらくすると、あなたがたはもうわたしを見なくなるが、またしばらくすると、わたしを見るようになる。」

16:17 そこで、弟子たちのある者は互いに言った。「『しばらくすると、あなたがたはわたしを見なくなるが、またしばらくすると、わたしを見るようになる』とか、『父のもとに行く』とか言っておられるのは、何のことだろう。」

16:18 また、言った。「『しばらくすると』と言っておられるのは、何のことだろう。何を話しておられるのか分からない。」

16:19 イエスは、彼らが尋ねたがっているのを知って言われた。「『しばらくすると、あなたがたはわたしを見なくなるが、またしばらくすると、わたしを見るようになる』と、わたしが言ったことについて、論じ合っているのか。

16:20 はっきり言っておく。あなたがたは泣いて悲嘆に暮れるが、世は喜ぶ。あなたがたは悲しむが、その悲しみは喜びに変わる。

16:21 女は子供を産むとき、苦しむものだ。自分の時が来たからである。しかし、子供が生まれると、一人の人間が世に生まれ出た喜びのために、もはやその苦痛を思い出さない。

16:22 ところで、今はあなたがたも、悲しんでいる。しかし、わたしは再びあなたがたと会い、あなたがたは心から喜ぶことになる。その喜びをあなたがたから奪い去る者はいない。

16:23 その日には、あなたがたはもはや、わたしに何も尋ねない。はっきり言っておく。あなたがたがわたしの名によって何かを父に願うならば、父はお与えになる。

16:24 今までは、あなたがたはわたしの名によっては何も願わなかった。願いなさい。そうすれば与えられ、あなたがたは喜びで満たされる。」

16:16 "In a little while you will not see me any more, and then a little while later you will see me."

16:17 Some of his disciples asked among themselves, "What does this mean? He tells us that in a little while we will not see him, and then a little while later we will see him; and he also says, "It is because I am going to the Father.'

16:18 What does this "a little while' mean? We don't know what he is talking about!"

16:19 Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, so he said to them, "I said, "In a little while you will not see me, and then a little while later you will see me.' Is this what you are asking about among yourselves?

16:20 I am telling you the truth: you will cry and weep, but the world will be glad; you will be sad, but your sadness will turn into gladness.

16:21 When a woman is about to give birth, she is sad because her hour of suffering has come; but when the baby is born, she forgets her suffering, because she is happy that a baby has been born into the world.

16:22 That is how it is with you: now you are sad, but I will see you again, and your hearts will be filled with gladness, the kind of gladness that no one can take away from you.

16:23 "When that day comes, you will not ask me for anything. I am telling you the truth: the Father will give you whatever you ask of him in my name.

16:24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your happiness may be complete.
