4:15 あなたたちは自らよく注意しなさい。主がホレブで火の中から語られた日、あなたたちは何の形も見なかった。

4:16 堕落して、自分のためにいかなる形の像も造ってはならない。男や女の形も、

4:17 地上のいかなる獣の形も、空を飛ぶ翼のあるいかなる鳥の形も、

4:18 地上を這ういかなる動物の形も、地下の海に住むいかなる魚の形も。

4:19 また目を上げて天を仰ぎ、太陽、月、星といった天の万象を見て、これらに惑わされ、ひれ伏し仕えてはならない。それらは、あなたの神、主が天の下にいるすべての民に分け与えられたものである。

4:20 しかし主はあなたたちを選び出し、鉄の炉であるエジプトから導き出し、今日のように御自分の嗣業の民とされた。

4:21 主はあなたたちのゆえにわたしに対して怒り、わたしがヨルダン川を渡ることも、あなたの神、主からあなたに嗣業として与えられる良い土地に入ることも決してない、と誓われた。

4:22 従って、わたしはヨルダン川を渡ることなくここで死ぬ。しかし、あなたたちは渡って行って、その良い土地を得る。

4:23 あなたたちは注意して、あなたたちの神、主があなたたちと結ばれた契約を忘れず、あなたの神、主が禁じられたいかなる形の像も造らぬようにしなさい。

4:24 あなたの神、主は焼き尽くす火であり、熱情の神だからである。

4:25 あなたが子や孫をもうけ、その土地に慣れて堕落し、さまざまの形の像を造り、あなたの神、主が悪と見なされることを行い、御怒りを招くならば、

4:26 わたしは今日、あなたたちに対して天と地を呼び出して証言させる。あなたたちは、ヨルダン川を渡って得るその土地から離されて速やかに滅び去り、そこに長く住むことは決してできない。必ず滅ぼされる。

4:27 主はあなたたちを諸国の民の間に散らされ、主に追いやられて、国々で生き残る者はわずかにすぎないであろう。

4:28 あなたたちはそこで、人間の手の業である、見ることも、聞くことも、食べることも、嗅ぐこともできない木や石の神々に仕えるであろう。

4:29 しかしあなたたちは、その所からあなたの神、主を尋ね求めねばならない。心を尽くし、魂を尽くして求めるならば、あなたは神に出会うであろう。

4:30 これらすべてのことがあなたに臨む終わりの日、苦しみの時に、あなたはあなたの神、主のもとに立ち帰り、その声に聞き従う。

4:31 あなたの神、主は憐れみ深い神であり、あなたを見捨てることも滅ぼすことも、あなたの先祖に誓われた契約を忘れられることもないからである。

4:32 あなたに先立つ遠い昔、神が地上に人間を創造された最初の時代にさかのぼり、また天の果てから果てまで尋ねてみるがよい。これほど大いなることがかつて起こったであろうか。あるいは、そのようなことを聞いたことがあろうか。

4:33 火の中から語られる神の声を聞いて、なお生きている、あなたと同じような民があったであろうか。

4:34 あるいは、あなたたちの神、主がエジプトにおいてあなたの目の前でなさったように、さまざまな試みとしるしと奇跡を行い、戦いと力ある御手と伸ばした御腕と大いなる恐るべき行為をもって、あえて一つの国民を他の国民の中から選び出し、御自身のものとされた神があったであろうか。

4:35 あなたは、主こそ神であり、ほかに神はいないということを示され、知るに至った。

4:36 主はあなたを訓練するために、天から御声を聞かせ、地上に大いなる御自分の火を示された。あなたは火の中からその言葉を聞いた。

4:37 主はあなたの先祖を愛されたがゆえに、その後の子孫を選び、御自ら大いなる力をもって、あなたをエジプトから導き出された。

4:38 神はあなたよりも強大な国々をあなたの前から追い払い、あなたを導いて、今日のように彼らの土地をあなたの嗣業の土地としてくださった。

4:39 あなたは、今日、上の天においても下の地においても主こそ神であり、ほかに神のいないことをわきまえ、心に留め、

4:40 今日、わたしが命じる主の掟と戒めを守りなさい。そうすれば、あなたもあなたに続く子孫も幸いを得、あなたの神、主がとこしえに与えられる土地で長く生きる。

◆逃れの町

4:41 モーセはその後、ヨルダン川の東側に三つの町を定め、

4:42 意図してでなく、以前から憎しみを抱いていたのでもないのに、隣人を殺してしまった者をそこに逃れさせ、その町の一つに逃れて生き延びることができるようにした。

4:43 それは、ルベン領の台地の荒れ野にあるベツェル、ガド領ギレアドのラモト、マナセ領バシャンのゴランである。

◆律法のまえがき

4:44 これから述べることは、モーセがイスラエルの人々に示した律法である。

4:45 イスラエルの人々がエジプトを出たとき、モーセが彼らに告げた定めと掟と法は次のとおりである。

4:46 それは、ヨルダン川の東で、ヘシュボンに住むアモリ人の王シホンの領土にあるベト・ペオルの前に広がる谷においてなされた。モーセとイスラエルの人々は、エジプトを出た後、この王を撃って、

4:15 "When the Lord spoke to you from the fire on Mount Sinai, you did not see any form. For your own good, then, make certain

4:16 that you do not sin by making for yourselves an idol in any form at all-whether man or woman,

4:17 animal or bird,

4:18 reptile or fish.

4:19 Do not be tempted to worship and serve what you see in the sky-the sun, the moon, and the stars. The Lord your God has given these to all other peoples for them to worship.

4:20 But you are the people he rescued from Egypt, that blazing furnace. He brought you out to make you his own people, as you are today.

4:21 Because of you the Lord your God was angry with me and solemnly declared that I would not cross the Jordan River to enter the fertile land which he is giving you.

4:22 I will die in this land and never cross the river, but you are about to go across and occupy that fertile land.

4:23 Be certain that you do not forget the covenant that the Lord your God made with you. Obey his command not to make yourselves any kind of idol,

4:24 because the Lord your God is like a flaming fire; he tolerates no rivals.

4:25 "Even when you have been in the land a long time and have children and grandchildren, do not sin by making for yourselves an idol in any form at all. This is evil in the Lord's sight, and it will make him angry.

4:26 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that, if you disobey me, you will soon disappear from the land. You will not live very long in the land across the Jordan that you are about to occupy. You will be completely destroyed.

4:27 The Lord will scatter you among other nations, where only a few of you will survive.

4:28 There you will serve gods made by human hands, gods of wood and stone, gods that cannot see or hear, eat or smell.

4:29 There you will look for the Lord your God, and if you search for him with all your heart, you will find him.

4:30 When you are in trouble and all those things happen to you, then you will finally turn to the Lord and obey him.

4:31 He is a merciful God. He will not abandon you or destroy you, and he will not forget the covenant that he himself made with your ancestors.

4:32 "Search the past, the time before you were born, all the way back to the time when God created human beings on the earth. Search the entire earth. Has anything as great as this ever happened before? Has anyone ever heard of anything like this?

4:33 Have any people ever lived after hearing a god speak to them from a fire, as you have?

4:34 Has any god ever dared to go and take a people from another nation and make them his own, as the Lord your God did for you in Egypt? Before your very eyes he used his great power and strength; he brought plagues and war, worked miracles and wonders, and caused terrifying things to happen.

4:35 The Lord has shown you this, to prove to you that he alone is God and that there is no other.

4:36 He let you hear his voice from heaven so that he could instruct you; and here on earth he let you see his holy fire, and he spoke to you from it.

4:37 Because he loved your ancestors, he chose you, and by his great power he himself brought you out of Egypt.

4:38 As you advanced, he drove out nations greater and more powerful than you, so that he might bring you in and give you their land, the land which still belongs to you.

4:39 So remember today and never forget: the Lord is God in heaven and on earth. There is no other god.

4:40 Obey all his laws that I have given you today, and all will go well with you and your descendants. You will continue to live in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to be yours forever."

4:41 Then Moses set aside three cities east of the Jordan River

4:42 to which a man could escape and be safe if he had accidentally killed someone who had not been his enemy. He could escape to one of these cities and not be put to death.

4:43 For the tribe of Reuben there was the city of Bezer, on the desert plateau; for the tribe of Gad there was Ramoth, in the territory of Gilead; and for the tribe of Manasseh there was Golan, in the territory of Bashan.

4:44 Moses gave God's laws and teachings to the people of Israel.

4:45 -46 It was after they had come out of Egypt and were in the valley east of the Jordan River, opposite the town of Bethpeor, that he gave them these laws. This was in the territory that had belonged to King Sihon of the Amorites, who had ruled in the town of Heshbon. Moses and the people of Israel defeated him when they came out of Egypt.

4:46

4:47 They occupied his land and the land of King Og of Bashan, the other Amorite king who lived east of the Jordan.

4:48 This land extended from the town of Aroer, on the edge of the Arnon River, all the way north to Mount Sirion, that is, Mount Hermon.

4:49 It also included all the region east of the Jordan River as far south as the Dead Sea and east to the foot of Mount Pisgah.
