9:4 あなたの神、主があなたの前から彼らを追い出されるとき、あなたは、「わたしが正しいので、主はわたしを導いてこの土地を得させてくださった」と思ってはならない。この国々の民が神に逆らうから、主があなたの前から彼らを追い払われるのである。

9:5 あなたが正しく、心がまっすぐであるから、行って、彼らの土地を得るのではなく、この国々の民が神に逆らうから、あなたの神、主が彼らを追い払われる。またこうして、主はあなたの先祖、アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブに誓われたことを果たされるのである。

9:6 あなたが正しいので、あなたの神、主がこの良い土地を与え、それを得させてくださるのではないことをわきまえなさい。あなたはかたくなな民である。

9:7 あなたは荒れ野で、あなたの神、主を怒らせたことを思い起こし、忘れてはならない。あなたたちは、エジプトの国を出た日からここに来るまで主に背き続けてきた。

9:8 ホレブにいたとき、あなたたちが主を怒らせたので、主はあなたたちに向かって激しく憤り、滅ぼそうとされた。

9:9 わたしが石の板、すなわち主があなたたちと結ばれた契約の板を受け取るため山に登ったとき、わたしは四十日四十夜、山にとどまり、パンも食べず水も飲まなかった。

9:10 主は、神の指で記された二枚の石の板をわたしにお授けになった。その上には、集会の日に、主が山で火の中からあなたたちに告げられた言葉がすべてそのとおりに記されていた。

9:11 四十日四十夜が過ぎて、主はわたしにその二枚の石の板、契約の板を授けられた。

9:12 そのとき、主はわたしに言われた。「すぐに立って、ここから下りなさい。あなたがエジプトから導き出した民は堕落し、早くもわたしが命じた道からそれて、鋳像を造った。」

9:13 主は更に、わたしに言われた。「わたしはこの民を見てきたが、実にかたくなな民である。

9:14 わたしを引き止めるな。わたしは彼らを滅ぼし、天の下からその名を消し去って、あなたを彼らより強く、数の多い国民とする。」

9:15 わたしが身を翻して山を下ると、山は火に包まれて燃えていた。わたしは両手に二枚の契約の板を持っていた。

9:1 "Listen, people of Israel! Today you are about to cross the Jordan River and occupy the land belonging to nations greater and more powerful than you. Their cities are large, with walls that reach the sky.

9:2 The people themselves are tall and strong; they are giants, and you have heard it said that no one can stand against them.

9:3 But now you will see for yourselves that the Lord your God will go ahead of you like a raging fire. He will defeat them as you advance, so that you will drive them out and destroy them quickly, as he promised.

9:4 "After the Lord your God has driven them out for you, do not say to yourselves that he brought you in to possess this land because you deserved it. No, the Lord is going to drive these people out for you because they are wicked.

9:5 It is not because you are good and do what is right that the Lord is letting you take their land. He will drive them out because they are wicked and because he intends to keep the promise that he made to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

9:6 You can be sure that the Lord is not giving you this fertile land because you deserve it. No, you are a stubborn people.

9:7 "Never forget how you made the Lord your God angry in the desert. From the day that you left Egypt until the day you arrived here, you have rebelled against him.

9:8 Even at Mount Sinai you made the Lord angry-angry enough to destroy you.

9:9 I went up the mountain to receive the stone tablets on which was written the covenant that the Lord had made with you. I stayed there forty days and nights and did not eat or drink anything.

9:10 Then the Lord gave me the two stone tablets on which he had written with his own hand what he had said to you from the fire on the day that you were gathered there at the mountain.

9:11 Yes, after those forty days and nights the Lord gave me the two stone tablets on which he had written the covenant.

9:12 "Then the Lord said to me, "Go down the mountain at once, because your people, whom you led out of Egypt, have become corrupt and have done evil. They have already turned away from what I commanded them to do, and they have made an idol for themselves.'

9:13 "The Lord also said to me, "I know how stubborn these people are.

9:14 Don't try to stop me. I intend to destroy them so that no one will remember them any longer. Then I will make you the father of a nation larger and more powerful than they are.'

9:15 "So I turned and went down the mountain, carrying the two stone tablets on which the covenant was written. Flames of fire were coming from the mountain.
