1:18 イエス・キリストの誕生の次第はこうであった。母マリヤはヨセフと婚約していたが、まだ一緒にならない前に、聖霊によって身重になった。
1:19 夫ヨセフは正しい人であったので、彼女のことが公けになることを好まず、ひそかに離縁しようと決心した。
1:20 彼がこのことを思いめぐらしていたとき、主の使が夢に現れて言った、「ダビデの子ヨセフよ、心配しないでマリヤを妻として迎えるがよい。その胎内に宿っているものは聖霊によるのである。
1:21 彼女は男の子を産むであろう。その名をイエスと名づけなさい。彼は、おのれの民をそのもろもろの罪から救う者となるからである」。
1:22 すべてこれらのことが起ったのは、主が預言者によって言われたことの成就するためである。すなわち、
1:23 「見よ、おとめがみごもって男の子を産むであろう。その名はインマヌエルと呼ばれるであろう」。これは、「神われらと共にいます」という意味である。

1:19 夫のヨセフは正しい人であって、彼女をさらし者にはしたくなかったので、内密に去らせようと決めた。
1:20 彼がこのことを思い巡らしていたとき、主の使いが夢に現われて言った。「ダビデの子ヨセフ。恐れないであなたの妻マリヤを迎えなさい。その胎に宿っているものは聖霊によるのです。
1:21 マリヤは男の子を産みます。その名をイエスとつけなさい。この方こそ、ご自分の民をその罪から救ってくださる方です。」
1:22 このすべての出来事は、主が預言者を通して言われた事が成就するためであった。
1:23 「見よ、処女がみごもっている。そして男の子を産む。その名はインマヌエルと呼ばれる。」（訳すと、神は私たちとともにおられる、という意味である。）

1:18 Now the birth of
Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,
before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.
1:19 Then Joseph her
husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was
minded to put her away secretly.
1:20 But while he thought
about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream,
saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your
wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
1:21 "And she will
bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His
people from their sins."
1:22 So all this was done
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet,
saying:
1:23 "Behold, the
virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name
Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us."
1:24 Then Joseph, being
aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him
his wife,
1:25 and did not know her
till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.

1:18 This was how the
birth of Jesus Christ took place. His mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but
before they were married, she found out that she was going to have a baby by
the Holy Spirit.
1:19 Joseph was a man who
always did what was right, but he did not want to disgrace Mary publicly; so he
made plans to break the engagement privately.
1:20 While he was
thinking about this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
"Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary to be your
wife. For it is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived.
1:21 She will have a son,
and you will name him Jesus-because he will save his people from their
sins."
1:22 Now all this
happened in order to make come true what the Lord had said through the prophet,
1:23 "A virgin will
become pregnant and have a son, and he will be called Immanuel" (which
means, "God is with us").
1:24 So when Joseph woke
up, he married Mary, as the angel of the Lord had told him to.
1:25 But he had no sexual
relations with her before she gave birth to her son. And Joseph named him
Jesus.
