14:1 そのころ、領主ヘロデはイエスのうわさを聞いて、
14:2 家来に言った、「あれはバプテスマのヨハネだ。死人の中からよみがえったのだ。それで、あのような力が彼のうちに働いているのだ」。
14:3 というのは、ヘロデは先に、自分の兄弟ピリポの妻ヘロデヤのことで、ヨハネを捕えて縛り、獄に入れていた。
14:4 すなわち、ヨハネはヘロデに、「その女をめとるのは、よろしくない」と言ったからである。
14:5 そこでヘロデはヨハネを殺そうと思ったが、群衆を恐れた。彼らがヨハネを預言者と認めていたからである。
14:6 さてヘロデの誕生日の祝に、ヘロデヤの娘がその席上で舞をまい、ヘロデを喜ばせたので、
14:7 彼女の願うものは、なんでも与えようと、彼は誓って約束までした。
14:8 すると彼女は母にそそのかされて、「バプテスマのヨハネの首を盆に載せて、ここに持ってきていただきとうございます」と言った。
14:9 王は困ったが、いったん誓ったのと、また列座の人たちの手前、それを与えるように命じ、
14:10 人をつかわして、獄中でヨハネの首を切らせた。
14:11 その首は盆に載せて運ばれ、少女にわたされ、少女はそれを母のところに持って行った。
14:12 それから、ヨハネの弟子たちがきて、死体を引き取って葬った。そして、イエスのところに行って報告した。

14:3 実は、このヘロデは、自分の兄弟ピリポの妻ヘロデヤのことで、ヨハネを捕えて縛り、牢に入れたのであった。
14:4 それは、ヨハネが彼に、「あなたが彼女をめとるのは不法です。」と言い張ったからである。
14:5 ヘロデはヨハネを殺したかったが、群衆を恐れた。というのは、彼らはヨハネを預言者と認めていたからである。
14:6 たまたまヘロデの誕生祝いがあって、ヘロデヤの娘がみなの前で踊りを踊ってヘロデを喜ばせた。
14:7 それで、彼は、その娘に、願う物は何でも必ず上げると、誓って堅い約束をした。

14:6 ところが、ヘロデの誕生日にヘロディアの娘が、皆の前で踊りをおどり、ヘロデを喜ばせた。
14:7 それで彼は娘に、「願うものは何でもやろう」と誓って約束した。
14:8 すると、娘は母親に唆されて、「洗礼者ヨハネの首を盆に載せて、この場でください」と言った。
14:9 王は心を痛めたが、誓ったことではあるし、また客の手前、それを与えるように命じ、

14:11 その首は盆に載せて運ばれ、少女に渡り、少女はそれを母親に持って行った。
14:12 それから、ヨハネの弟子たちが来て、遺体を引き取って葬り、イエスのところに行って報告した。

14:1 At that time Herod
the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus
14:2 and said to his
servants, "This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and
therefore these powers are at work in him."
14:3 For Herod had laid
hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his
brother Philip's wife.
14:4 Because John had
said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."
14:5 And although he
wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him
as a prophet.
14:6 But when Herod's
birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and
pleased Herod.
14:7 Therefore he
promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.
14:8 So she, having been
prompted by her mother, said, "Give me John the Baptist's head here on a
platter."
14:9 And the king was
sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with
him, he commanded it to be given to her.
14:10 So he sent and had
John beheaded in prison.
14:11 And his head was
brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
14:12 Then his disciples
came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

14:1 At that time Herod,
the ruler of Galilee, heard about Jesus.
14:2 "He is really
John the Baptist, who has come back to life," he told his officials.
"That is why he has this power to perform miracles."
14:3 For Herod had
earlier ordered John's arrest, and he had him tied up and put in prison. He had
done this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.
14:4 For some time John
the Baptist had told Herod, "It isn't right for you to be married to
Herodias!"
14:5 Herod wanted to kill
him, but he was afraid of the Jewish people, because they considered John to be
a prophet.
14:6 On Herod's birthday
the daughter of Herodias danced in front of the whole group. Herod was so
pleased
14:7 that he promised
her, "I swear that I will give you anything you ask for!"
14:8 At her mother's
suggestion she asked him, "Give me here and now the head of John the
Baptist on a plate!"
14:9 The king was sad,
but because of the promise he had made in front of all his guests he gave
orders that her wish be granted.
14:10 So he had John
beheaded in prison.
14:11 The head was
brought in on a plate and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.
14:12 John's disciples
came, carried away his body, and buried it; then they went and told Jesus.
