16:13 When Jesus came
into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, "Who
do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?"
16:14 So they said,
"Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the
prophets."
16:15 He said to them,
"But who do you say that I am?"
16:16 Simon Peter
answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
16:17 Jesus answered and
said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has
not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.
16:18 "And I also
say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the
gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
16:19 "And I will
give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will
be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in
heaven."
16:20 Then He commanded
His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.

16:13 Jesus went to the
territory near the town of Caesarea Philippi, where he asked his disciples,
"Who do people say the Son of Man is?"
16:14 "Some say John
the Baptist," they answered. "Others say Elijah, while others say
Jeremiah or some other prophet."
16:15 "What about
you?" he asked them. "Who do you say I am?"
16:16 Simon Peter
answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."
16:17 "Good for you,
Simon son of John!" answered Jesus. "For this truth did not come to
you from any human being, but it was given to you directly by my Father in
heaven.
16:18 And so I tell you,
Peter: you are a rock, and on this rock foundation I will build my church, and
not even death will ever be able to overcome it.
16:19 I will give you the
keys of the Kingdom of heaven; what you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in
heaven, and what you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven."
16:20 Then Jesus ordered
his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
