42:1 ヤコブは、エジプトに穀物があると知って、息子たちに、「どうしてお前たちは顔を見合わせてばかりいるのだ」と言い、更に、

42:2 「聞くところでは、エジプトには穀物があるというではないか。エジプトへ下って行って穀物を買ってきなさい。そうすれば、我々は死なずに生き延びることができるではないか」と言った。

42:3 そこでヨセフの十人の兄たちは、エジプトから穀物を買うために下って行った。

42:4 ヤコブはヨセフの弟ベニヤミンを兄たちに同行させなかった。何か不幸なことが彼の身に起こるといけないと思ったからであった。

42:5 イスラエルの息子たちは、他の人々に混じって穀物を買いに出かけた。カナン地方にも飢饉が襲っていたからである。

42:6 ところで、ヨセフはエジプトの司政者として、国民に穀物を販売する監督をしていた。ヨセフの兄たちは来て、地面にひれ伏し、ヨセフを拝した。

42:7 ヨセフは一目で兄たちだと気づいたが、そしらぬ振りをして厳しい口調で、「お前たちは、どこからやって来たのか」と問いかけた。彼らは答えた。「食糧を買うために、カナン地方からやって参りました。」

42:8 ヨセフは兄たちだと気づいていたが、兄たちはヨセフとは気づかなかった。

42:9 ヨセフは、そのとき、かつて兄たちについて見た夢を思い起こした。ヨセフは彼らに言った。「お前たちは回し者だ。この国の手薄な所を探りに来たにちがいない。」

42:10 彼らは答えた。「いいえ、御主君様。僕どもは食糧を買いに来ただけでございます。

42:11 わたしどもは皆、ある男の息子で、正直な人間でございます。僕どもは決して回し者などではありません。」

42:12 しかしヨセフが、「いや、お前たちはこの国の手薄な所を探りに来たにちがいない」と言うと、

42:13 彼らは答えた。「僕どもは、本当に十二人兄弟で、カナン地方に住むある男の息子たちでございます。末の弟は、今、父のもとにおりますが、もう一人は失いました。」

42:14 すると、ヨセフは言った。「お前たちは回し者だとわたしが言ったのは、そのことだ。

42:15 その点について、お前たちを試すことにする。ファラオの命にかけて言う。いちばん末の弟を、ここに来させよ。それまでは、お前たちをここから出すわけにはいかぬ。

42:16 お前たちのうち、だれか一人を行かせて、弟を連れて来い。それまでは、お前たちを監禁し、お前たちの言うことが本当かどうか試す。もしそのとおりでなかったら、ファラオの命にかけて言う。お前たちは間違いなく回し者だ。」

42:17 ヨセフは、こうして彼らを三日間、牢獄に監禁しておいた。

42:18 三日目になって、ヨセフは彼らに言った。「こうすれば、お前たちの命を助けてやろう。わたしは神を畏れる者だ。

42:19 お前たちが本当に正直な人間だというのなら、兄弟のうち一人だけを牢獄に監禁するから、ほかの者は皆、飢えているお前たちの家族のために穀物を持って帰り、

42:20 末の弟をここへ連れて来い。そうして、お前たちの言い分が確かめられたら、殺されはしない。」彼らは同意して、

42:21 互いに言った。「ああ、我々は弟のことで罰を受けているのだ。弟が我々に助けを求めたとき、あれほどの苦しみを見ながら、耳を貸そうともしなかった。それで、この苦しみが我々にふりかかった。」

42:22 すると、ルベンが答えた。「あのときわたしは、『あの子に悪いことをするな』と言ったではないか。お前たちは耳を貸そうともしなかった。だから、あの子の血の報いを受けるのだ。」

42:23 彼らはヨセフが聞いているのを知らなかった。ヨセフと兄弟たちの間に、通訳がいたからである。

42:24 ヨセフは彼らから遠ざかって泣いた。それからまた戻って来て、話をしたうえでシメオンを選び出し、彼らの見ている前で縛り上げた。

42:25 ヨセフは人々に命じて、兄たちの袋に穀物を詰め、支払った銀をめいめいの袋に返し、道中の食糧を与えるように指示し、そのとおり実行された。

42:26 彼らは穀物をろばに積んでそこを立ち去った。

42:27 途中の宿で、一人がろばに餌をやろうとして、自分の袋を開けてみると、袋の口のところに自分の銀があるのを見つけ、

42:28 ほかの兄弟たちに言った。「戻されているぞ、わたしの銀が。ほら、わたしの袋の中に。」みんなの者は驚き、互いに震えながら言った。「これは一体、どういうことだ。神が我々になさったことは。」

42:29 一行はカナン地方にいる父ヤコブのところへ帰って来て、自分たちの身に起こったことをすべて報告した。

42:30 「あの国の主君である人が、我々を厳しい口調で問い詰めて、この国を探りに来た回し者にちがいないと言うのです。

42:31 もちろん、我々は正直な人間で、決して回し者などではないと答えました。

42:32 我々が十二人兄弟で、一人の父の息子であり、一人は失いましたが、末の弟は今、カナンの地方に住む父のもとにいますと言ったところ、

42:33 あの国の主君である人が言いました。『では、お前たちが本当に正直な人間かどうかを、こうして確かめることにする。お前たち兄弟のうち、一人だけここに残し、飢えているお前たちの家族のために、穀物を持ち帰るがいい。

42:34 ただし、末の弟を必ずここへ連れて来るのだ。そうすれば、お前たちが回し者ではなく、正直な人間であることが分かるから、お前たちに兄弟を返し、自由にこの国に出入りできるようにしてやろう。』」

42:35 それから、彼らが袋を開けてみると、めいめいの袋の中にもそれぞれ自分の銀の包みが入っていた。彼らも父も、銀の包みを見て恐ろしくなった。

42:36 父ヤコブは息子たちに言った。「お前たちは、わたしから次々と子供を奪ってしまった。ヨセフを失い、シメオンも失った。その上ベニヤミンまでも取り上げるのか。みんなわたしを苦しめることばかりだ。」

42:37 ルベンは父に言った。「もしも、お父さんのところにベニヤミンを連れ帰らないようなことがあれば、わたしの二人の息子を殺してもかまいません。どうか、彼をわたしに任せてください。わたしが、必ずお父さんのところに連れ帰りますから。」

42:38 しかし、ヤコブは言った。「いや、この子だけは、お前たちと一緒に行かせるわけにはいかぬ。この子の兄は死んでしまい、残っているのは、この子だけではないか。お前たちの旅の途中で、何か不幸なことがこの子の身に起こりでもしたら、お前たちは、この白髪の父を、悲嘆のうちに陰府に下らせることになるのだ。」

ＴＥＶ 創  42:1-38

42:1 When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, "Why don't you do something?

42:2 I hear that there is grain in Egypt; go there and buy some to keep us from starving to death."

42:3 So Joseph's ten half brothers went to buy grain in Egypt,

42:4 but Jacob did not send Joseph's full brother Benjamin with them, because he was afraid that something might happen to him.

42:5 The sons of Jacob came with others to buy grain, because there was famine in the land of Canaan.

42:6 Joseph, as governor of the land of Egypt, was selling grain to people from all over the world. So Joseph's brothers came and bowed down before him with their faces to the ground.

42:7 When Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he acted as if he did not know them. He asked them harshly, "Where do you come from?" /"We have come from Canaan to buy food," they answered.

42:8 Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.

42:9 He remembered the dreams he had dreamed about them and said, "You are spies; you have come to find out where our country is weak."

42:10 "No, sir," they answered. "We have come as your slaves, to buy food.

42:11 We are all brothers. We are not spies, sir, we are honest men."

42:12 Joseph said to them, "No! You have come to find out where our country is weak."

42:13 They said, "We were twelve brothers in all, sir, sons of the same man in the land of Canaan. One brother is dead, and the youngest is now with our father."

42:14 "It is just as I said," Joseph answered. "You are spies.

42:15 This is how you will be tested: I swear by the name of the king that you will never leave unless your youngest brother comes here.

42:16 One of you must go and get him. The rest of you will be kept under guard until the truth of what you say can be tested. Otherwise, as sure as the king lives, you are spies."

42:17 With that, he put them in prison for three days.

42:18 On the third day Joseph said to them, "I am a God-fearing man, and I will spare your lives on one condition.

42:19 To prove that you are honest, one of you will stay in the prison where you have been kept; the rest of you may go and take back to your starving families the grain that you have bought.

42:20 Then you must bring your youngest brother to me. This will prove that you have been telling the truth, and I will not put you to death." /They agreed to this

42:21 and said to one another, "Yes, now we are suffering the consequences of what we did to our brother; we saw the great trouble he was in when he begged for help, but we would not listen. That is why we are in this trouble now."

42:22 Reuben said, "I told you not to harm the boy, but you wouldn't listen. And now we are being paid back for his death."

42:23 Joseph understood what they said, but they did not know it, because they had been speaking to him through an interpreter.

42:24 Joseph left them and began to cry. When he was able to speak again, he came back, picked out Simeon, and had him tied up in front of them.

42:25 Joseph gave orders to fill his brothers' packs with grain, to put each man's money back in his sack, and to give them food for the trip. This was done.

42:26 The brothers loaded their donkeys with the grain they had bought, and then they left.

42:27 At the place where they spent the night, one of them opened his sack to feed his donkey and found his money at the top of the sack.

42:28 "My money has been returned to me," he called to his brothers. "Here it is in my sack!" Their hearts sank, and in fear they asked one another, "What has God done to us?"

42:29 When they came to their father Jacob in Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them:

42:30 "The governor of Egypt spoke harshly to us and accused us of spying against his country.

42:31 "We are not spies,' we answered, "we are honest men.

42:32 We were twelve brothers in all, sons of the same father. One brother is dead, and the youngest is still in Canaan with our father.'

42:33 The man answered, "This is how I will find out if you are honest men: One of you will stay with me; the rest will take grain for your starving families and leave.

42:34 Bring your youngest brother to me. Then I will know that you are not spies, but honest men; I will give your brother back to you, and you can stay here and trade."'

42:35 Then when they emptied out their sacks, every one of them found his bag of money; and when they saw the money, they and their father Jacob were afraid.

42:36 Their father said to them, "Do you want to make me lose all my children? Joseph is gone; Simeon is gone; and now you want to take away Benjamin. I am the one who suffers!"

42:37 Reuben said to his father, "If I do not bring Benjamin back to you, you can kill my two sons. Put him in my care, and I will bring him back."

42:38 But Jacob said, "My son cannot go with you; his brother is dead, and he is the only one left. Something might happen to him on the way. I am an old man, and the sorrow you would cause me would kill me."
