43:1 この地方の飢饉はひどくなる一方であった。

43:2 エジプトから持ち帰った穀物を食べ尽くすと、父は息子たちに言った。「もう一度行って、我々の食糧を少し買って来なさい。」

43:3 しかし、ユダは答えた。「あの人は、『弟が一緒でないかぎり、わたしの顔を見ることは許さぬ』と、厳しく我々に言い渡したのです。

43:4 もし弟を一緒に行かせてくださるなら、我々は下って行って、あなたのために食糧を買って参ります。

43:5 しかし、一緒に行かせてくださらないのなら、行くわけにはいきません。『弟が一緒でないかぎり、わたしの顔を見ることは許さぬ』と、あの人が我々に言ったのですから。」

43:6 「なぜお前たちは、その人にもう一人弟がいるなどと言って、わたしを苦しめるようなことをしたのか」とイスラエルが言うと、

43:7 彼らは答えた。「あの人が、我々のことや家族のことについて、『お前たちの父親は、まだ生きているのか』とか、『お前たちには、まだほかに弟がいるのか』などと、しきりに尋ねるものですから、尋ねられるままに答えただけです。まさか、『弟を連れて来い』などと言われようとは思いも寄りませんでしたから。」

43:8 ユダは、父イスラエルに言った。「あの子をぜひわたしと一緒に行かせてください。それなら、すぐにでも行って参ります。そうすれば、我々も、あなたも、子供たちも死なずに生き延びることができます。

43:9 あの子のことはわたしが保障します。その責任をわたしに負わせてください。もしも、あの子をお父さんのもとに連れ帰らず、無事な姿をお目にかけられないようなことにでもなれば、わたしがあなたに対して生涯その罪を負い続けます。

43:10 こんなにためらっていなければ、今ごろはもう二度も行って来たはずです。」

43:11 すると、父イスラエルは息子たちに言った。「どうしてもそうしなければならないのなら、こうしなさい。この土地の名産の品を袋に入れて、その人への贈り物として持って行くのだ。乳香と蜜を少し、樹脂と没薬、ピスタチオやアーモンドの実。

43:12 それから、銀を二倍用意して行きなさい。袋の口に戻されていた銀も持って行ってお返しするのだ。たぶん何かの間違いだったのだろうから。

43:13 では、弟を連れて、早速その人のところへ戻りなさい。

43:14 どうか、全能の神がその人の前でお前たちに憐れみを施し、もう一人の兄弟と、このベニヤミンを返してくださいますように。このわたしがどうしても子供を失わねばならないのなら、失ってもよい。」

43:15 息子たちは贈り物と二倍の銀を用意すると、ベニヤミンを連れて、早速エジプトへ下って行った。さて、一行がヨセフの前に進み出ると、

43:16 ヨセフはベニヤミンが一緒なのを見て、自分の家を任せている執事に言った。「この人たちを家へお連れしなさい。それから、家畜を屠って料理を調えなさい。昼の食事をこの人たちと一緒にするから。」

43:17 執事はヨセフに言われたとおりにし、一同をヨセフの屋敷へ連れて行った。

43:18 一同はヨセフの屋敷へ連れて来られたので、恐ろしくなって、「これはきっと、前に来たとき我々の袋に戻されていたあの銀のせいだ。それで、ここに連れ込まれようとしているのだ。今に、ろばもろとも捕らえられ、ひどい目に遭い、奴隷にされてしまうにちがいない」と思った。

43:19 彼らは屋敷の入り口のところでヨセフの執事の前に進み出て、話しかけて、

43:20 言った。「ああ、御主人様。実は、わたしどもは前に一度、食糧を買うためにここへ来たことがございます。

43:21 ところが、帰りに宿で袋を開けてみると、一人一人の袋の口のところにそれぞれ自分の銀が入っておりました。しかも、銀の重さは元のままでした。それで、それをお返ししなければ、と持って参りました。

43:22 もちろん、食糧を買うための銀は、別に用意してきております。一体誰がわたしどもの袋に銀を入れたのか分かりません。」

43:23 執事は、「御安心なさい。心配することはありません。きっと、あなたたちの神、あなたたちの父の神が、その宝を袋に入れてくださったのでしょう。あなたたちの銀は、このわたしが確かに受け取ったのですから」と答え、シメオンを兄弟たちのところへ連れて来た。

43:24 執事は一同をヨセフの屋敷に入れ、水を与えて足を洗わせ、ろばにも餌を与えた。

43:25 彼らは贈り物を調えて、昼にヨセフが帰宅するのを待った。一緒に食事をすることになっていると聞いたからである。

43:26 ヨセフが帰宅すると、一同は屋敷に持って来た贈り物を差し出して、地にひれ伏してヨセフを拝した。

43:27 ヨセフは一同の安否を尋ねた後、言った。「前に話していた、年をとった父上は元気か。まだ生きておられるか。」

43:28 「あなたさまの僕である父は元気で、まだ生きております」と彼らは答え、ひざまずいて、ヨセフを拝した。

43:29 ヨセフは同じ母から生まれた弟ベニヤミンをじっと見つめて、「前に話していた末の弟はこれか」と尋ね、「わたしの子よ。神の恵みがお前にあるように」と言うと、

43:30 ヨセフは急いで席を外した。弟懐かしさに、胸が熱くなり、涙がこぼれそうになったからである。ヨセフは奥の部屋に入ると泣いた。

43:31 やがて、顔を洗って出て来ると、ヨセフは平静を装い、「さあ、食事を出しなさい」と言いつけた。

43:32 食事は、ヨセフにはヨセフの、兄弟たちには兄弟たちの、相伴するエジプト人にはエジプト人のものと、別々に用意された。当時、エジプト人は、ヘブライ人と共に食事をすることはできなかったからである。それはエジプト人のいとうことであった。

43:33 兄弟たちは、いちばん上の兄から末の弟まで、ヨセフに向かって年齢順に座らされたので、驚いて互いに顔を見合わせた。

43:34 そして、料理がヨセフの前からみんなのところへ配られたが、ベニヤミンの分はほかのだれの分より五倍も多かった。一同はぶどう酒を飲み、ヨセフと共に酒宴を楽しんだ。

ＴＥＶ 創  43:1-34

43:1 The famine in Canaan got worse,

43:2 and when the family of Jacob had eaten all the grain which had been brought from Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, "Go back and buy a little food for us."

43:3 Judah said to him, "The man sternly warned us that we would not be admitted to his presence unless we had our brother with us.

43:4 If you are willing to send our brother with us, we will go and buy food for you.

43:5 If you are not willing, we will not go, because the man told us we would not be admitted to his presence unless our brother was with us."

43:6 Jacob said, "Why did you cause me so much trouble by telling the man that you had another brother?"

43:7 They answered, "The man kept asking about us and our family, "Is your father still living? Do you have another brother?' We had to answer his questions. How could we know that he would tell us to bring our brother with us?"

43:8 Judah said to his father, "Send the boy with me, and we will leave at once. Then none of us will starve to death.

43:9 I will pledge my own life, and you can hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you safe and sound, I will always bear the blame.

43:10 If we had not waited so long, we could have been there and back twice by now."

43:11 Their father said to them, "If that is how it has to be, then take the best products of the land in your packs as a present for the governor: a little resin, a little honey, spices, pistachio nuts, and almonds.

43:12 Take with you also twice as much money, because you must take back the money that was returned in the top of your sacks. Maybe it was a mistake.

43:13 Take your brother and return at once.

43:14 May Almighty God cause the man to have pity on you, so that he will give Benjamin and your other brother back to you. As for me, if I must lose my children, I must lose them."

43:15 So the brothers took the gifts and twice as much money, and set out for Egypt with Benjamin. There they presented themselves to Joseph.

43:16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the servant in charge of his house, "Take these men to my house. They are going to eat with me at noon, so kill an animal and prepare it."

43:17 The servant did as he was commanded and took the brothers to Joseph's house.

43:18 As they were being brought to the house, they were afraid and thought, "We are being brought here because of the money that was returned in our sacks the first time. They will suddenly attack us, take our donkeys, and make us his slaves."

43:19 So at the door of the house, they said to the servant in charge,

43:20 "If you please, sir, we came here once before to buy food.

43:21 When we set up camp on the way home, we opened our sacks, and each man found his money in the top of his sack-every bit of it. We have brought it back to you.

43:22 We have also brought some more money with us to buy more food. We do not know who put our money back in our sacks."

43:23 The servant said, "Don't worry. Don't be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, must have put the money in your sacks for you. I received your payment." Then he brought Simeon to them.

43:24 The servant took the brothers into the house. He gave them water so that they could wash their feet, and he fed their donkeys.

43:25 They got their gifts ready to present to Joseph when he arrived at noon, because they had been told that they were to eat with him.

43:26 When Joseph got home, they took the gifts into the house to him and bowed down to the ground before him.

43:27 He asked about their health and then said, "You told me about your old father-how is he? Is he still alive and well?"

43:28 They answered, "Your humble servant, our father, is still alive and well." And they knelt and bowed down before him.

43:29 When Joseph saw his brother Benjamin, he said, "So this is your youngest brother, the one you told me about. God bless you, my son."

43:30 Then Joseph left suddenly, because his heart was full of tender feelings for his brother. He was about to break down, so he went to his room and cried.

43:31 After he had washed his face, he came out, and controlling himself, he ordered the meal to be served.

43:32 Joseph was served at one table and his brothers at another. The Egyptians who were eating there were served separately, because they considered it beneath their dignity to eat with Hebrews.

43:33 The brothers had been seated at the table, facing Joseph, in the order of their age from the oldest to the youngest. When they saw how they had been seated, they looked at one another in amazement.

43:34 Food was served to them from Joseph's table, and Benjamin was served five times as much as the rest of them. So they ate and drank with Joseph until they were drunk.
