44:1 ヨセフは執事に命じた。「あの人たちの袋を、運べるかぎり多くの食糧でいっぱいにし、めいめいの銀をそれぞれの袋の口のところへ入れておけ。

44:2 それから、わたしの杯、あの銀の杯を、いちばん年下の者の袋の口に、穀物の代金の銀と一緒に入れておきなさい。」執事はヨセフが命じたとおりにした。

44:3 次の朝、辺りが明るくなったころ、一行は見送りを受け、ろばと共に出発した。

44:4 ところが、町を出て、まだ遠くへ行かないうちに、ヨセフは執事に命じた。「すぐに、あの人たちを追いかけ、追いついたら彼らに言いなさい。『どうして、お前たちは悪をもって善に報いるのだ。

44:5 あの銀の杯は、わたしの主人が飲むときや占いのときに、お使いになるものではないか。よくもこんな悪いことができたものだ。』」

44:6 執事は彼らに追いつくと、そのとおりに言った。

44:7 すると、彼らは言った。「御主人様、どうしてそのようなことをおっしゃるのですか。僕どもがそんなことをするなどとは、とんでもないことです。

44:8 袋の口で見つけた銀でさえ、わたしどもはカナンの地から持ち帰って、御主人様にお返ししたではありませんか。そのわたしどもがどうして、あなたの御主君のお屋敷から銀や金を盗んだりするでしょうか。

44:9 僕どもの中のだれからでも杯が見つかれば、その者は死罪に、ほかのわたしどもも皆、御主人様の奴隷になります。」

44:10 すると、執事は言った。「今度もお前たちが言うとおりならよいが。だれであっても、杯が見つかれば、その者はわたしの奴隷にならねばならない。ほかの者には罪は無い。」

44:11 彼らは急いで自分の袋を地面に降ろし、めいめいで袋を開けた。

44:12 執事が年上の者から念入りに調べ始め、いちばん最後に年下の者になったとき、ベニヤミンの袋の中から杯が見つかった。

44:13 彼らは衣を引き裂き、めいめい自分のろばに荷を積むと、町へ引き返した。

44:14 ユダと兄弟たちがヨセフの屋敷に入って行くと、ヨセフはまだそこにいた。一同は彼の前で地にひれ伏した。

44:15 「お前たちのしたこの仕業は何事か。わたしのような者は占い当てることを知らないのか」とヨセフが言うと、

44:16 ユダが答えた。「御主君に何と申し開きできましょう。今更どう言えば、わたしどもの身の証しを立てることができましょう。神が僕どもの罪を暴かれたのです。この上は、わたしどもも、杯が見つかった者と共に、御主君の奴隷になります。」

44:17 ヨセフは言った。「そんなことは全く考えていない。ただ、杯を見つけられた者だけが、わたしの奴隷になればよい。ほかのお前たちは皆、安心して父親のもとへ帰るがよい。」

◆ユダの嘆願

44:18 ユダはヨセフの前に進み出て言った。「ああ、御主君様。何とぞお怒りにならず、僕の申し上げますことに耳を傾けてください。あなたはファラオに等しいお方でいらっしゃいますから。

44:19 御主君は僕どもに向かって、『父や兄弟がいるのか』とお尋ねになりましたが、

44:20 そのとき、御主君に、『年とった父と、それに父の年寄り子である末の弟がおります。その兄は亡くなり、同じ母の子で残っているのはその子だけですから、父は彼をかわいがっております』と申し上げました。

44:21 すると、あなたさまは、『その子をここへ連れて来い。自分の目で確かめることにする』と僕どもにお命じになりました。

44:22 わたしどもは、御主君に、『あの子は、父親のもとから離れるわけにはまいりません。あの子が父親のもとを離れれば、父は死んでしまいます』と申しましたが、

44:23 あなたさまは、『その末の弟が一緒に来なければ、再びわたしの顔を見ることは許さぬ』と僕どもにおっしゃいました。

44:24 わたしどもは、あなたさまの僕である父のところへ帰り、御主君のお言葉を伝えました。

44:25 そして父が、『もう一度行って、我々の食糧を少し買って来い』と申しました折にも、

44:26 『行くことはできません。もし、末の弟が一緒なら、行って参ります。末の弟が一緒でないかぎり、あの方の顔を見ることはできないのです』と答えました。

44:27 すると、あなたさまの僕である父は、『お前たちも知っているように、わたしの妻は二人の息子を産んだ。

44:28 ところが、そのうちの一人はわたしのところから出て行ったきりだ。きっとかみ裂かれてしまったと思うが、それ以来、会っていない。

44:29 それなのに、お前たちはこの子までも、わたしから取り上げようとする。もしも、何か不幸なことがこの子の身に起こりでもしたら、お前たちはこの白髪の父を、苦しめて陰府に下らせることになるのだ』と申しました。

44:30 今わたしが、この子を一緒に連れずに、あなたさまの僕である父のところへ帰れば、父の魂はこの子の魂と堅く結ばれていますから、

44:31 この子がいないことを知って、父は死んでしまうでしょう。そして、僕どもは白髪の父を、悲嘆のうちに陰府に下らせることになるのです。

44:32 実は、この僕が父にこの子の安全を保障して、『もしも、この子をあなたのもとに連れて帰らないようなことがあれば、わたしが父に対して生涯その罪を負い続けます』と言ったのです。

44:33 何とぞ、この子の代わりに、この僕を御主君の奴隷としてここに残し、この子はほかの兄弟たちと一緒に帰らせてください。

44:34 この子を一緒に連れずに、どうしてわたしは父のもとへ帰ることができましょう。父に襲いかかる苦悶を見るに忍びません。」

ＴＥＶ 創  44:1-34

44:1 Joseph commanded the servant in charge of his house, "Fill the men's sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man's money in the top of his sack.

44:2 Put my silver cup in the top of the youngest brother's sack, together with the money for his grain." He did as he was told.

44:3 Early in the morning the brothers were sent on their way with their donkeys.

44:4 When they had gone only a short distance from the city, Joseph said to the servant in charge of his house, "Hurry after those men. When you catch up with them, ask them, "Why have you paid back evil for good?

44:5 Why did you steal my master's silver cup? It is the one he drinks from, the one he uses for divination. You have committed a serious crime!"'

44:6 When the servant caught up with them, he repeated these words.

44:7 They answered him, "What do you mean, sir, by talking like this? We swear that we have done no such thing.

44:8 You know that we brought back to you from the land of Canaan the money we found in the top of our sacks. Why then should we steal silver or gold from your master's house?

44:9 Sir, if any one of us is found to have it, he will be put to death, and the rest of us will become your slaves."

44:10 He said, "I agree; but only the one who has taken the cup will become my slave, and the rest of you can go free."

44:11 So they quickly lowered their sacks to the ground, and each man opened his sack.

44:12 Joseph's servant searched carefully, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest, and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.

44:13 The brothers tore their clothes in sorrow, loaded their donkeys, and returned to the city.

44:14 When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house, he was still there. They bowed down before him,

44:15 and Joseph said, "What have you done? Didn't you know that a man in my position could find you out by practicing divination?"

44:16 "What can we say to you, sir?" Judah answered. "How can we argue? How can we clear ourselves? God has uncovered our guilt. All of us are now your slaves and not just the one with whom the cup was found."

44:17 Joseph said, "Oh, no! I would never do that! Only the one who had the cup will be my slave. The rest of you may go back safe and sound to your father."

44:18 Judah went up to Joseph and said, "Please, sir, allow me to speak with you freely. Don't be angry with me; you are like the king himself.

44:19 Sir, you asked us, "Do you have a father or another brother?'

44:20 We answered, "We have a father who is old and a younger brother, born to him in his old age. The boy's brother is dead, and he is the only one of his mother's children still alive; his father loves him very much.'

44:21 Sir, you told us to bring him here, so that you could see him,

44:22 and we answered that the boy could not leave his father; if he did, his father would die.

44:23 Then you said, "You will not be admitted to my presence again unless your youngest brother comes with you.'

44:24 "When we went back to our father, we told him what you had said.

44:25 Then he told us to return and buy a little food.

44:26 We answered, "We cannot go; we will not be admitted to the man's presence unless our youngest brother is with us. We can go only if our youngest brother goes also.'

44:27 Our father said to us, "You know that my wife Rachel bore me only two sons.

44:28 One of them has already left me. He must have been torn to pieces by wild animals, because I have not seen him since he left.

44:29 If you take this one from me now and something happens to him, the sorrow you would cause me would kill me, as old as I am.'

44:30 -31 "And now, sir," Judah continued, "if I go back to my father without the boy, as soon as he sees that the boy is not with me, he will die. His life is wrapped up with the life of the boy, and he is so old that the sorrow we would cause him would kill him.

44:31

44:32 What is more, I pledged my life to my father for the boy. I told him that if I did not bring the boy back to him, I would bear the blame all my life.

44:33 And now, sir, I will stay here as your slave in place of the boy; let him go back with his brothers.

44:34 How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? I cannot bear to see this disaster come upon my father."
